Originally, Rutgers Formula Racing was known as Rutgers Formula SAE. It was founded in 1989 by a group of engineering students who wanted to apply their classroom knowledge to a practical application, in this case engineering a formula-type car. Since then, the club has grown and now is a strong contender for the yearly competition (comprised of some 120 plus colleges and universities from around the world).
